The ‘Spouse’ Visa
If you have married a Japanese national then you are entitled to receive ‘spouse visa to stay in Japan. Japanese immigration authorities require a copy of your spouse’s family register (Koseki touhon) with your name written in as spouse as proof of your marriage.
Such a visa gives you just about all the rights of a Japanese national except voting in elections (and that also may become possible in the future)
Generally you will first receive a one year visa which can eventually become a three year visa (you may receive a couple of one year extensions first before they will issue a three year one)
As long as you stay legitimately married to your Japanese spouse (and can provide proof that you are indeed maintaining the marriage) your stay in Japan can be infinite. The only other step after such a visa would be a ‘permanent residency’ visa which never expires even after divorce or death of your spouse.
If you do divorce from your Japanese spouse your spouse visa does not immediately become invalid. It will simply expire at the end of its term and you will have to change to another type of visa or leave the country.
(As always remember. YMMV - Your mileage may vary)

Hi!Good day!I had a problem right now and Im looking forward for some positive outcome regarding this matter.Im a Filipina and already married with a Japanese national just this year January 17,2005. My worry now is that my husband was sick, he is now experiencing depression his mind condition right now was not stable I am so much worried because almost one month that I dont have communication with him he use to off his cellular phone.I dont have have any knowledge where he is really right now because I tried to contact his mother and told me that 10 days ago their son was not yet return to their house. I dont have any source of information right now I am staying now in the Philippines and his now in Aomori City the only access I can have for him now is telephone but unfortunately his phone was off.I dont know if there something behind or what. I dont know if his family was just trying to hide their son with me. I dont see any reason to do that towards me because during those hard times of their son I was the only one always beside him despite of his problems I never give up but instead give the full effort I can give for our relationship. We decided to get married because I believe in LOVE…theres nothing important in this world except one thing and that is HAPPINESS…and being with him is one of my happiness.I want to take care of him. I want to give the attention and love his longing for such a long time which he had not experienced in the family. My concern now is there any possibility for me just to visit him so I could know the real situation his experiencing right now.Im so pity with him and I always believe that it is not the end of everything…for as long as we lives there always hope…faith and believe in the glory of GOD.I hope you could help me out…Thank you!!More Power!!GODBLESS
My husband name is KAZUHIRO KON
ADDRESS: 6-7-32 Sakuragawa,Aomori shi Aomori City PHONE# 0177-423-763.

Your visa will be ok as long as the expiration date on it has not been released. In addition, it should be easy to renew your spouse visa even if your Japanese husband quit his job (or is temporarporly unemployed).
