I think that the age of consent should be left to the parents and their children. I’f a 13 girl wants to be with a 20 30 40 50 0r 100 year old guy or a 13 yr old boy wants to be with a 100 year old woman it should be between the youngest party and their parents. State and federal law should be preventing kids from being rape and molested. But consentual sex should be ok. My great grand mother was married and had a kid buy the time she was 14 and she stayed with that man until the day he died. The only reason people apose the idea is because they are narrow minded and scared. I say its high time to oppse this oppression and rise up to say we are a free people and should be allowed to choose how we live.

Just like to point out to Jonkaru, perhaps you have merely assumed we are all adults because of your own age and because you may have assumed you are above teenagers. I am sure we are not all necessarily adults.
I am 18 and I ask do you honestly think I am an “adult” purely because of that? Common sense should stretch beyond laws, not be controlled by them.
I am not talking about the issue but rather your perception of age.
I know I for one will remember what its like to be young.

you guys simply dont understand foreign culture. the age of CONSENT is 13 in SOME parts, meaning, that if you KNOW what sex is, and you WISH to have it, you may consent to it. but why would you consent to something you dont know about? even if you were that young? i dont know of anyone who would. some of you think it’s sick for anyone to fuck a blossoming boy or girl, but i’m sure that those wonderfully blossoming children have forbidden fantasies just like you do. Actually, I do believe that while the nationwide age of consent is 13 in Japan, nonconsensual sex with a minor is more harshly punished than nonconsensual sex with an adult. So basically what Japanese law is doing is making it so that minors are protected but not restricted so long as they are above the age of 13.

gaara i couldnt agree with you more when i was 13 i began spending all my time trying to get porn and all kinds of other bs. eventually my parents just didnt really care and i got over it. ive been screwing around with girls since i was like 14, and im not messed up. americans are so self rightous so many here think everybody elses country should be just like ours.

I agree with Gaara on this.

Teenagers want to have sex, whether the law wants them to or not.
In the US in high school, I knew a lot of kids who were beginning to be sexually active at the age of 13 and 14. I nearly lost my virginity at 13 and a lot of people I knew lost their virginity at 14….and a lot of girls became pregnant by the age of 16 or 17 due to bad sexual education.

The main thing about this is education. If you bring up your children with a good, well-rounded knowledge of safe sex and safety in general, then they will be able to look out for themselves.

Whether it’s legal or not a parent still should have some control over their child. If they tell their 14 year old daughter that it is not ok to have sex with someone over a certain age for now, then that will have more impact than spending time whining about the law.

I’m also alarmed by the fact that girls are being the ones of concern here. Why is sex seen as such a negative thing for girls? This outlook is the problem to begin with.
Girls (and boys) should be taught that sex is something healthy that should happen with healthy people…they shouldn’t be constantly told to be afraid of it.

ok, what you people fail to see beyond a consent age, is that people will have sex whenever they want. instead of focusing on the fact that they make it legal to have sex earlier, focus more on the fact on how to prevent pregnancy and spread of std’s. i think at this point in our world culture we should just get past the fact that teenagers will have sex, and just push more that if they should choose to that they should do it safely. in japan you can buy everything in vending machines, smokes, beer, condoms, dirty magazines anything! so i think japan and most of europe has a much better grasp on the reality, they make these things openly available so that teenagers can experience them and get them over with and mature much easier then americans. americans try to hide everything, so youll find that a kid got pregnant because he was too afraid to buy a condom or ask their parents about safe sex. so to all you people who responded with shock and awe, wake up and see the real world.

Pedophilia MEANS PRE-PUBESCENT, if it’s a girl who is in or past puberty, then it simply is NOT pedophilia, period. That’s the DEFINITION and the LAW. It’s what the word means.

Statutory rape and pedophilia are not the same thing. 14, 15, 16…year old girls are going to be attractive to men, of course, and any girl, if she LOOKS like a sexually developed young woman, is going to be sexually attractive to most men, even if they are affraid to admit it because they don’t want to be accused of something.

I had sex when I was 12 with my 12 year old girlfriend and SHE initiated the entire thing… I was very inexperienced and I hadn’t even kissed a girl before her. Sexual thoughts aren’t limited to just guys you poor close minded fool.

HAHAHAHA. Well the age of consent in the most sexually repressed western country in the world(america) isn’t even that strict. In some states its as low as 14 and in most you just can’t have sex with someone thats 3 years younger than you. Meaning an 18 year old can have sex with a 16 year old.

What kind of sexually repressed world do you live in? Do you honestly think there’s that much difference in maturity between an 18 and 16 year old? Do you think that a girl that age can’t understand what she’s doing? You seem to be getting 9 year old girls and 14-17 year old girls confused.

I have a friend on the sex offenders list because he had consensual sex with a 16 year old when he was 19. He has to live the rest of his life labeled as some kind of child molester because of this. They don’t tell the story, for all they know they could have loved each other. The only thing it says on the list is “indecency w/ a child by sexual contact”. That pretty much brands him in his own neighborhood. The consent laws are pretty messed up.
